FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

GENERAL FAQ'S

What is the pelvic floor and why does it matter?

Your pelvic floor is a group of muscles at the base of your pelvis. Think of them like a hammock supporting your bladder, bowel, and reproductive organs. When these muscles are weak, tight, or disconnected from your breathing, you leak, feel heaviness, experience pain, or lose the ability to do the activities you love. We rebuild that connection so your body works the way it should.

How is your approach different from regular physical therapy?

Traditional PT focuses on one body part in isolation. We assess your entire system: how you breathe, how your core coordinates, how your posture loads your pelvis, how your pelvic floor connects to your movement patterns. We look at you from head to toe because dysfunction rarely lives in one spot. That’s how we actually solve the problem instead of just managing symptoms.

What happens in my first appointment?

Your first session is a full assessment. We look at your breathing pattern, how your core activates, your movement quality, and do a pelvic floor evaluation. We also assess how your posture and movement patterns throughout your whole body affect your pelvic floor. We ask detailed questions about your goals and what’s holding you back. You’ll leave with clarity on what’s happening and a clear plan.

How many sessions will I need?

Every person is different, but most clients notice meaningful improvements within the first few visits when they consistently apply what we teach. At Shine Through Strength PT, we guide clients through our 3 step method: Trust, Challenge, Perform. First, we help you reconnect to your body and understand what’s actually going on. Then we progressively challenge your strength, coordination, and movement patterns so you can confidently return to the activities you love. Your exact timeline depends on your goals, symptoms, and consistency with the plan we create together.

What should I expect during treatment?

Every session is one on one and  personalized to you. We use manual therapy, breathing work, movement patterns, and nervous system training. You’ll learn why we’re doing what we’re doing so you understand your body. Expect to feel different: stronger, more connected, more in control. By the end of your first week.

PELVIC FLOOR FAQ'S

Can pelvic floor therapy help with leakage during exercise, sneezing, or laughing?

Yes. Leakage happens when your pelvic floor is weak or when your breathing and core aren’t coordinated. We assess your full movement pattern, identify what’s holding you back, and teach you how to stabilize during high impact activity: jumping, running, exercising. So you can get back to your workouts without thinking about it. Most clients see significant improvement in 4 to 6 weeks.

Why do I leak after having a baby?

Pregnancy and delivery change your pelvic floor. The muscles are stretched, fatigued, and often disconnected from your breathing pattern. You’re not broken. Your body just needs to rebuild that connection and regain strength. We start with the basics: breathing, gentle activation. Then progress to full strength return. The timeline depends on how involved you want to be, but consistent work gets fast results.

Can you help with pain during sex or heaviness in my pelvis?

Absolutely. Pain with sex often means your pelvic floor is too tight or not coordinating properly with your breathing. Heaviness usually signals weakness or poor support. Both are fixable. We look at your entire system: posture, core engagement, breathing. We identify what’s causing it and teach you how to relax and engage appropriately. You’ll get back to feeling comfortable and confident.

Why am I experiencing pelvic floor changes during perimenopause?

Hormonal shifts affect your pelvic floor directly. You might leak during workouts, feel heaviness, or lose sensation where you used to have control. This isn’t age. It’s your body adjusting. We rebuild strength and stability so you stay as active and confident as you were before. Most clients regain control in 6 to 12 weeks with consistent treatment.

I’m in menopause and losing strength. Can you help me rebuild?

Yes. Menopause changes muscle tone, tissue quality, and how your pelvic floor coordinates with your core. We address those changes head on and get you back to feeling strong and capable. Your 50s don’t have to feel different than your 40s.

Can pelvic floor therapy help me stay strong and active as I age?

Absolutely. Your pelvic floor is the foundation of everything: athletic performance, confidence, quality of life. We build the strength and coordination you need to Move With Confidence through every decade. Whether you’re in your 30s, 50s, or beyond, a strong pelvic floor keeps you capable and unrestricted.

Can pelvic floor therapy help men?

Yes. Men experience erectile dysfunction, pelvic pain, prostatitis, and urinary leakage. Most men have tried medications, various surgeries, or other treatments without getting results. Why? Because the pelvic floor was never addressed. It’s usually the missing link. We assess your entire pelvic system, identify the root cause, and teach you how to strengthen and relax appropriately. Men see real results once they know this is even an option.

Is internal treatment always needed for pelvic health sessions?

Many clients make real progress with external work alone: breathing retraining, manual therapy to the pelvic floor and surrounding muscles, movement patterns, and core work. Some people need or want internal assessment to identify specific restrictions. We talk through what makes sense for you based on your goals and comfort level.

Is pelvic floor therapy safe during pregnancy?

Yes, absolutely. In fact, we recommend starting pelvic floor PT at 16 weeks pregnant. Most women come late in pregnancy to address pain or leakage, but by that time we’re just treating symptoms. When we start early, we build strength and coordination so that as your baby grows, your body is ready. We also work to keep your baby in an optimal birthing position and help train your partner or spouse in ways they can support you during pregnancy and delivery.

Can I come to therapy during my period?
Yes. External therapy, manual work, exercise, and education can all be performed during menstruation. If an internal assessment is part of your plan and you’d prefer to skip it during your period, that’s completely fine. We’ll simply focus on other beneficial techniques that session. Your comfort and preferences always guide what we do.

ORTHOPEDIC & MOVEMENT FAQ'S

Can physical therapy help with back pain, hip pain, or knee pain?

Yes. Pain is often the result of poor movement patterns, weakness, mobility restrictions, or compensation somewhere else in the body. We don’t just chase symptoms. We assess how your entire body moves together so we can identify the true root cause and help you move confidently again without constantly relying on medications, injections, or temporary fixes.

Why does my pain keep coming back even after injections, rest, or other care?

Many treatments focus on temporary symptom relief without addressing the underlying movement dysfunction causing the issue in the first place. If your breathing, core coordination, strength, posture, or movement patterns aren’t addressed, the pain often returns. We identify those missing links and rebuild your body from the ground up so you can create lasting change instead of short term relief.

Can physical therapy help me get back to workouts safely?

Absolutely. Whether you’re returning to the gym, running, CrossFit, Pilates, yoga, pickleball, or strength training, we help you rebuild strength, coordination, and confidence safely. Our goal isn’t just to decrease pain. It’s to help you return to the activities you love feeling stronger and more capable than before.

Do you work with athletes or active adults?

Yes. We work with active adults of all levels who want to stay strong, mobile, and performing at a high level. Whether you’re a recreational runner, busy parent, gym goer, former athlete, or someone simply trying to stay active as you age, treatment is individualized to your goals and lifestyle.

Can physical therapy help improve my strength and mobility as I age?

Absolutely. Strength, balance, mobility, and coordination naturally change over time, but that doesn’t mean you have to stop doing the things you love. We help you maintain and rebuild strength so you can continue exercising, traveling, lifting grandchildren, and living actively with confidence through every decade.
